/join #maplestory

and you're done.

For registering your nickname etc, post here and I'll help.

The IRC guru approves this thread!

And don't worry. I won't bite. Hard.

All joking aside, seriously everyone, get your butts to the channel. Idle. Chat. Talk about ANYTHING. Anything at all. The channel is for YOU.

Handy links to popular clients:
  • X-Chat 2 (Windows XP/Vista/7,Linux) - Free
  • mIRC (Windows XP/Vista/7) - Shareware (but unlimited use, it just nags you after 30 days without restricting your use of it)
  • ChatZilla for Firefox (Windows XP/Vista/7) - Free, runs in the browser itself, easy to set up

Basically a chatroom. IRC is short for Internet Relay Chat

Yes, IRC is short for "Internet Relay Chat", it's one of the oldest forms of online communication that is still quite popular today.

IRC uses a client-server model. The IRC server is what holds the "channels", the rooms users can chat in. Some of the largest of the IRC networks (IRC network = collection of different IRC servers all linked together over the internet under the same network name) may have at any given time up to 1000+ active channels, each with as many as 800-900 users (I've seen some channels with user counts higher than that).

The IRC client is the program that you, the user, downloads and installs to connect to a given IRC network (see above post for links to some popular clients). Most IRC clients today are capable of connecting to many different IRC networks at once, not to mention displaying everything the IRC server displays to you in a nice, easy to read, easy to understand format.

That's IRC in a nutshell for ya.

How do people chat with that many users in a single channel? I'd imagine even 30 users would be flooding the chat.

A lot of people like to idle in the channel. They begin to talk/discuss things when a person brings up something, it doesn't typically get flooded and you can usually participate without any headaches. :\

Exactly what Clashex said. You often have people connecting from all over the world. A lot of them idle in the channel when they're away/sleeping (I'm one of them, I always leave myself on the our IRC channel 24/7), and chat when they feel like it.

For a veteran of IRC such as myself, I'm used to being around a *LOT* of people at once...but I can also say for those that are just getting into it by visiting our channel, you should be able to handle it no sweat. Just do what I do - connect and stay connected, and chat when you're not away/sleeping, or if there's nothing really interesting going on then, just leave yourself connected anyway. That way there's always more people hanging around.
